Khiladi 786 – movie review

Born to the proprietor of a marriage bureau Champak Lal (Manoj Joshi), Mansukh (Himesh Reshammiya) has been a complete failure ever since he has grown up and tried to help his father in their family business. All the alliances he had tried to get done have resulted in separation even before the marriages take place.

To prove his worth to his father, he takes up an unusual challenge of getting an underworld don Tatya Tukaram Tendulkar – TT bhai’s (Mithun Chakraborty) spoilt brat sister Indu (Asin Thottumkal) getting married to a cop called Bahattar Singh aka Khiladi 786 (Akshay Kumar) who is from Punjab.

To add more to his problems he convinces even TT bhai to pretend as a cop but little did the over enthusiast know that Bahattar Singh (Mr. Singh no: 72), his father Sattar Singh – which implies Mr. Singh no: 70 (Raj Babbar) and his uncle Ikhattar Singh – 71 (Mukesh Rishi) were not cops but a family of conmen.

It is now clear that this Singh family names their children chronologically.

The story takes a shape as the two hardcore families of two different states pretend to be policemen in front of each other and the beans from each side can be spilled anytime which can be life threatening for Mansukh.

There is a twist here – Indu has a boyfriend, Azad (Rahul Singh), who is a hard core criminal locked up in jail.

When Bahattar finds out about Indu’s love for Azad, he manages to get Azad out of the lock-up. All this, in an attempt to keep Indu happy, as he has affection for the girl.

Some time later on, Indu realizes that she is in true love with Bahattar Singh, and announces her decision to wed him.

This upsets her ex love Azad, who kidnaps Indu and wants to get forcibly married to her.

There are amusing moments in this action comedy. Bahattar’s mother is a Canadian, and his aunty is a Chinese, while his paternal grandmother is an African. There is a need to have an Indian wife in the family, and hence Bahattar’s father is keen to go ahead with his son’s matrimonial alliance with TT bhai’s family

It is Akshay Kumar’s film and he lives up to his reputation of a ‘Khiladi’ Kumar. Asin looks beautiful, but isn’t given much of screen time.

Himesh Reshammiya is a notch better than his previous films. Mithun Chakraborty and Raj Babbar are perfect in their characters. Manoj Joshi as Himesh’s father is too loud and theatrical.

Claudia Ciesla appears in a foot tapping item number – Balma (a hit number composed by Himesh).

The film has a couple of chart busters. Decently paced, this musical romantic comedy is an action film too.
